Gears of War: E-Day Aim Assist & Controller Settings
What Default, Snap Aim, and Lock-On actually do in Versus, Horde Siege, and campaign.
The Coalition’s August 12, 2026 Open Beta notes include a settings clarification that weekend-one players kept asking about: aim assist is not one slider for every mode. The in-game text is still incomplete in the beta build — the studio says the full explanation arrives at the October 6 launch — so this page records what the notes and follow-up reporting actually mean before you queue Versus or Horde Siege.
General Open Beta is live through August 17 at 10:00 AM PT. Search “Gears Beta” if you still need the client. Pair this page with Controls & Keybindings for remaps, Active Reload for HUD placement, and Versus Beta Tips for Market and Outpost habits that do not depend on extra assist.
The three assist tiers
Controller aim assist in the beta sits on a short ladder. Names can shift slightly in the menu, but the behavior split is consistent:
| Setting | Campaign | Horde Siege | Versus 4v4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off | No assist | No assist | No assist |
| Default | Standard rotational / friction assist | Same | Same — Versus still gets default assist |
| Snap Aim | Stronger snap toward targets | Stronger snap | Does not apply |
| Lock-On | Strongest PvE assist | Strongest PvE assist | Does not apply |
Default is the franchise-familiar layer: a modest amount of help that past Gears titles and most console shooters ship in competitive playlists. You can turn the whole system Off if you want raw stick input in every mode.
Snap Aim and Lock-On are the two higher steps. Official notes state they affect Campaign and Horde Siege only. Versus ignores those two steps even if the menu still lets you highlight them. That is the missing sentence the settings screen does not yet print.
Why Versus feels different from Horde
Horde Siege is twelve players versus Locust. Extra snap is a readability tool when a Corpser or Brumak fills the lane and three squads are shouting R.I.G. callouts. Versus is 4v4 fair-start PvP with identical loadouts and no Weapon Mods. The Coalition kept default assist in Versus so controller players are not thrown into a raw-input playlist, but they withheld the two stronger PvE modes so Ranked and Social do not become snap-to-head fights.
If you practiced Horde on Lock-On during Early Access and then queued Versus, the stick will feel “empty.” That is intended, not a broken profile. Warm up in Social Team Deathmatch on Market or Outpost before you treat Ranked-style scrims as a test of the new movement kit.
Keyboard and mouse players should treat this page as a controller document. KBM has no Snap Aim / Lock-On ladder. Your work is DPI, in-game sensitivity, and the movement slide-to-cover chain.
Recommended setups for the live beta
Horde Siege (Golden Quarter) — Start on Default if you already play Gears on a pad. Move to Snap Aim only if Invasion Events or dense Infantry waves make target swaps exhausting. Lock-On is a teaching tool for new players and for Medic / Marksman players who spend more time on the reticle than on slides. It will not follow you into Versus.
Versus Social and Ranked — Leave the menu on Default or Off. Changing the slider to Snap or Lock-On will not give you Horde-style help in a 4v4. Spend that time on Gnasher spacing and Active Reload instead of hunting a hidden Versus snap.
Campaign / Boot Camp — Use whatever helps you learn jump, slide, vault, and micro-destruction cover. Campaign is not in the August beta focus, but the same rules will apply when the full game unlocks October 6 (or October 1 for Premium and Collector).
Other settings that change gunfeel
Aim assist is only one line in the combat stack:
- Active Reload HUD — Center-of-reticle is the E-Day default; a classic top-right option exists. Perfect reloads still matter, but the August 12 Prototype Lancer pass raised base damage and cut perfect-reload bonus damage, so a missed perfect is less punishing. Details: Active Reload and the Weekend 2 patch.
- Look sensitivity and dead zones — Raise look speed before you raise assist. High Snap Aim on a slow stick feels sticky; Default on a tuned stick feels like older Gears.
- Steam controllers — Weekend 2 improved third-party pads that failed to appear at launch. Connect the pad before you start the client; unplug extra keyboard and mouse USB dongles if Steam still ignores the gamepad. Fixes: beta error codes.
- Vibration and trigger — Turn vibration down for Horde twelve-player chaos if it masks reload audio cues.
Accessibility and narrator
Official known issues still list narrator and menu narration as unfinished. Do not assume every settings label is final. If a control remaps but the spoken name is wrong, treat it as a beta bug already on beta known issues rather than a new ticket — unless you have a reproducible crash with steps.
Fair-start Versus still rewards movement
Because Snap Aim and Lock-On stay out of Versus, the skill gap in Market and Outpost is movement, Active Reload, and Gnasher discipline, not who found a hidden assist. Read Versus 4v4 Tactics and Versus modes after you lock the slider. Horde players who want PvE help can keep a higher assist for Golden Quarter and swap mentally when they change playlists — the game will not carry Lock-On into a 4v4 even if the menu looks like it did.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for Emergence Day prep and launch week.
Does aim assist work in Gears of War: E-Day Versus?
Default assist still applies in Versus, as in previous Gears games. Snap Aim and Lock-On apply only to Campaign and Horde Siege. You can turn assist Off in every mode.
Why does the settings screen skip this explanation?
The Coalition listed the missing clarification in the August 12 notes. The extra sentence is scheduled for the October 6 launch build, not the August beta client.
Should I use Lock-On for Open Beta Horde Siege?
Lock-On is fine for learning Golden Quarter or playing Medic and Marksman. It will not help in Versus. Many returning players stay on Default in both playlists.
Does keyboard and mouse get Snap Aim?
No. Snap Aim and Lock-On are controller options. Mouse players tune sensitivity and practice slide-to-cover instead.
Did the August 12 patch change aim assist strength?
The published notes clarify where each setting applies. They do not list a Versus strength buff or nerf — only the missing settings text and the mode split.
