Versus Modes Guide

Versus in Gears of War: E-Day is built around four-versus-four teams with fair starts: every player spawns with the same loadout, so rounds are decided by movement, cover use, and communication rather than pre-match shopping. The Coalition ships four core playlists at launch — Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible — each available in Ranked and Social queues plus onboarding through Boot Camp and Combat Training. This guide breaks down win conditions, pacing, and squad habits for each mode so you can queue with intent instead of treating every playlist identically.

Read the multiplayer overview for how Versus fits next to Horde Siege, then study Versus 4v4 Tactics for map control, Ranked versus Social etiquette, and spawn denial fundamentals. Map-specific angles for all six launch arenas live on Kalona maps. New players should finish Getting Started and Movement & Cover before Ranked — missed Active Reloads cost fights in every mode below.

Fair starts and shared rules

Every Versus playlist uses mirrored spawns and identical starting kits. Power weapons and pickups appear on timers at fixed map locations documented in the maps guide. Micro-destruction still applies: holding one chunk of cover too long invites enemies to shoot it away and collapse your angle.

Cross-play spans Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Steam at the October 6, 2026 launch, with Open Beta exposure during August 6–10 (pre-order or Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass) and August 13–17 (general Open Beta). Confirm active playlists on the Open Beta schedule before planning Ranked grinds during test windows.

Team Deathmatch

Team Deathmatch (TDM) is the purest aim-and-movement check. Your squad earns points for eliminations; first team to the score limit — or the leading team when time expires — wins the match.

TDM rewards disciplined trading. Assign implicit zones so one player anchors center while others slide for flanks. Because there is no bomb or capture point, the only “objective” is alive teammates with good angles. Avoid chasing lone frags across the map when you already lead — death timers in 4v4 swing rounds fast.

TDM squad habits:

  • Call enemy count on first contact (“two mid, one right”).
  • Rotate as a pair when cover fails; solo hero pushes feed enemy Stim-like momentum even without Horde Medic kits.
  • Control power weapon spawns on Outpost, Battleship, and Park — central pickups decide mid-game swings.

Use Social TDM to warm Active Reload timing, then move to Ranked TDM once you win neutral gunfights without staring at the reload bar.

Conquest

Conquest adds territorial control. Teams fight over capture zones — typically two or three per map depending on arena layout — while eliminations still matter for breaking enemy holds.

Winning Conquest is about presence, not kill farming. Two players can neutralize a zone while two others skirmish at the adjacent point. When your team owns two zones, play for time: force enemies into bad retakes instead of hunting respawns on the far side of Precinct or Market.

Conquest squad habits:

  • Split 2–2 when two zones are active; stack 3–1 only when you need a fast flip on a losing point.
  • Save explosives for retake attempts, not opening duels.
  • Communicate “touch” versus “hold” — touching a zone for a second does nothing if nobody stays to channel the capture.

Conquest teaches map literacy faster than TDM because rotations are predictable. Pair Conquest nights with the maps guide callouts until zone names become reflex.

Demolition

Demolition (or bomb-plant style attack/defense depending on final UI naming) pits attackers against defenders around a single high-value site. Attackers plant an objective device; defenders deny the plant or defuse after contact.

This is E-Day’s round-based mode. Economy is time, not credits — each round resets loadouts, so adaptation beats streak snowballing. Attackers should default to two entry, one support, one flank routes: entries trade damage for plant space, support covers revive angles, flank catches rotators.

Defenders win by information. Early sound cues on Skyward vertical lanes or Battleship choke points tell you which site is live before the plant animation starts. Do not stack all four players on the site — one off-angle watcher breaks execute timings.

Demolition squad habits:

  • Attackers: smoke or stagger tools before plant, not after.
  • Defenders: call “plant” immediately; half-second delays lose defuses.
  • Both sides: respect post-plant time — defenders can win on clock even after attackers die if the defuse never starts.

Demolition is the highest communication mode in launch Versus. Queue with a four-stack when possible.

Crucible

Crucible is E-Day’s hybrid or rotating-rule playlist — the mode The Coalition uses for experimental twists on standard Versus flow. Expect modified win conditions, faster round timers, or loadout constraints that differ from TDM and Conquest.

Treat Crucible as the meta laboratory. Social Crucible is the safest place to learn rule variants before Ranked Crucible seasons tie into Season 1: Emergence and later seasons on the seasons roadmap. Because rules may patch frequently, bookmark Updates and re-read patch notes before ranked sessions each week.

Crucible squad habits:

  • Read the pre-match briefing card every time — variants change between events.
  • Prioritize rule-specific objectives over kill chasing (similar to Conquest discipline).
  • Record one VOD per session; Crucible footwork often previews balance changes that hit other playlists later.

Ranked vs Social by mode

ModeSocial useRanked use
Team DeathmatchAim warm-up, sensitivity tuningRating grind when gunfight fundamentals are stable
ConquestLearn zone names and rotationsCoordinated four-stack recommended
DemolitionPractice plant/defuse timingsHighest comms requirement; avoid solo queue early
CrucibleLearn variant rules safelyPush after reading weekly patch notes

Ranked and Social share maps and loadouts but differ in matchmaking strictness and seasonal rewards tied to the progression system. Medals from Bronze through Diamond track standout performances across modes.

Boot Camp and Combat Training

Before your first live Versus match, complete Boot Camp for controller or mouse basics and Combat Training for E-Day-specific chains — slide entries, vault flanks, and reticle-near Active Reload under dummy fire. These tutorials mirror fair-start loadouts so habits transfer directly to TDM.

Skipping tutorials shows up immediately in Demolition retakes where animation locks punish panicked inputs. Horde Siege players crossing from Horde Siege should unlearn AI timing: human opponents pre-aim vault paths on Park within hours of beta start.
